Below is a letter I wrote to a student in one of my college classes, who is a Jehovah’s Witness, with her name removed:
What Must I do to be Saved?
Dear [Jehovah’s Witness],
I expect that we will not have enough time to get into everything I want to cover. I did leave notes in the “Good News from God” booklet, but my handwriting is awful. You may not be able to read it, or even if you can, you may not be able to organize it in a particularly effective manner, since I wrote down all of the major objections I had to the Jehovah’s Witness’ theology. I am giving you this so that regardless of what we may get to talk about in person, by God’s Grace you will have the gospel in front of you, clearly presented. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me anytime (1 Peter 3:14-15)
Acts 16:31 says “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved.” The next verse, Acts 16:32, has Paul explaining the gospel to the jailer, the gospel which he must believe in order to truly “Believe in Christ.” Below I shall explain to you why the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not teach the true gospel, and what the true gospel is.
There’s a lot in your theology about God’s love, and while it is true that God loves the world (John 3:16) he also hates all workers of iniquity (Psalms 5:5.) All have sinned and fallen short of God’s Glory (Romans 3:23) and none of us seeks after God (Romans 3:11) . The Bible also says that all who are ignorant of Christ’s righteousness are lost (Romans 10:3.) Furthermore, Mark 16:16 says that those who do not believe the gospel are lost. As someone who believes a mere created being, rather than God incarnate (John 1:1, John 1:14, Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 7:14, and Revelation 1:8-21) died for sins, and that God would not torment his enemies eternally, you are ignorant of God’s righteousness. You do not believe the gospel. As such, you are still lost (Galatians 1:8-9) If you do not believe in the Deity of Christ, you believe that God used a mere creation to redeem us, which is a false gospel. 2 John 7-11 teaches us not to accept one who denies that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Yet many, even atheists, will acknowledge that there was a man named “Jesus Christ.” These people are nonetheless clearly lost (John 3:18.) What 2 John 7-11 is teaching is that someone who denies that Christ was God in the flesh does not believe the Truth and is lost. Furthermore, in John 10:30-31, we see the Jews trying to stone Jesus because he claimed to be God.
The Bible says that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23.) Matthew 35:46, Revelation 21:8, Revelation 14:11, Mark 9:43 Luke 3:17, and numerous other passages teach the eternal nature of Hell’s torment. If you don’t believe this, you don’t understand the gospel.
There is good news, however. You can still repent and believe. If you do, you will be saved. Jesus says in John 6:37 that none can come to Him unless the Father draws him. However, it also says that anyone who comes to him will not be cast out. If reading this, or hearing the gospel from any other Christian, or even reading the Bible yourself, causes you to believe God’s gospel, you will be saved. John 10:15 says that Christ died for his sheep. He died not simply to make salvation possible through good works (As is a frequent theme of “Good News From God”) but to accomplish redemption for his chosen people. John 10:26 says those who are not his sheep will not believe. John 10:27-29 makes clear that anyone who does believe the gospel (Which includes an understanding of the deity of Christ, and the righteousness of God which causes him to hate sin and punish workers of iniquity for all eternity). Matthew 7:22-23 clearly states that those who trust in any of their own works, rather than Christ’s work on the cross alone, for their salvation on the last day, will be lost.
Acts 17:30 says that God commands all men everywhere to repent. God is calling on you to repent of your false religion that causes you to condition salvation on your own works before God, and your false belief that anyone but God in the flesh could reconcile you to God. If you do this, Christ’s blood for his people will be imputed to your account, and you will be justified before God, not because of any work of your own, but because Christ died to cover your sin.
Remember that I do not say any of this to be unloving. If I were to tell you you are OK while you are in a false religion, I would be unloving. That would be proof that I hate you. It would be like seeing a man’s house burning down, and telling him he was fine. Or, it would be like a doctor knowing his patient would die if he didn’t receive the antidote to a deadly disease, yet refusing to tell him.
Again, I will be praying for you, that God would open your eyes to his gospel. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me. I pray that I would have no higher priority.
From [My Name]
Feel free to use any or all of this letter for witnessing to any Jehovah’s Witnesses you may know. And pray that God will open the heart and mind of this girl and of Jehovah’s Witnesses like her who are still lost.
